Get a degree and some wisdom

When talking about subtle ideas, it is best to be as clear as possible. Here I go... Lehman College has taught me something priceless.  It has taught me that if you love what you do, everything else falls into place. I am nearing the end of my Sophomore year and this has been the message that the professors and faculty have instilled. In addition, the faculty at Lehman exhibit a positive attitude - my goal is to become a Physician's Assistant and the idea I will take from Lehman is one that...

Reciprocity at Lehman College

My job title is "College Assistant." Let us explore the semantics of this title. An assistant is someone who helps out with minor tasks, with the larger task often assigned to someone else. While the definition works if you are explaining the requirements of a college assistant to someone, it is insufficient when considering what something means to each individual. My understanding of my position is akin to that of a young child and a superhero: I feel like I am saving the world! OK, perhaps...

My Home Close to Home

I have been a Lehman College student for 8 years now (where does the time go?)!  I earned my Bachelor's degree in Social Work and am now pursuing my Master's degree also in Social Work (Lehman graduating class of 2013).

Lehman has been a wonderful place for me. I appreciate the assistance of all the professors who have always been willing to go the extra mile to help.  They're dedicated to their profession and passionate about their work. It's a beautiful feeling to meet people that are living...

Lehman Studios and Law & Order: SVU

Okay everyone -- get the popcorn ready and set your DVR's for October 10, 2012. The second episode of Law & Order: SVU will be broadcast on that day. On August 2nd, Lehman Studios, among other locations of Lehman College, hosted the recording of parts of this episode. Many of our students worked as extras and our staff assisted in the setup of the studio as a cooking show, Livia's Italian Kitchen. Lots of fun for everyone and a great experience as well.

What I Didn't Think Was Going To Happen

If you were to tell me that I was going to like being back in school, I would have told you that you were crazy!  I was unemployed and got a grant to take some classes and decided to take the training classes at a college. Lehman College was on the list as part of a government grant training program. Mary Dowling was the first person I met and she became one of my biggest motivators. She looked at me and said that "you seem to be taking classes here and there, why don't you try to go to...

5 Years and Off

I have spent 9 semesters at Lehman, and I AM FINALLY GOING GRADUATE!  But I am glad that I ended up at Lehman. My experiences have been great. As a freshman, I knew I wanted to go into political science and save the world, but joining Student Government actually got me working. It helped me realize that networking has the word "work" in it for a reason. Since I was able to get to know so many people and organizations, I was able to create my own major, study abroad on a full scholarship, and...

Cheated But Not Robbed

I am in an auditorium of Fordham University, sitting in one of the front rows. I sit in my silky white gown, feeling anxious of what I have to do- give a valedictorian speech in front of the audience filled with school faculty members, proud parents, family members, and friends. But though I was nervous, I felt honored to be given the title of the top student in my high school senior class  And if that was not enough, I was accepted into three of my desired colleges, Maryland Institute of...

Student Success Part I

Last week some colleagues and I attended and presented at a conference on Student Success sponsored by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) www.aacu.org in Seattle, Washington. Seattle did not disappoint in regards to weather, it was grey and chilly, but the Pike Street Market has some great fish eateries that we were able to enjoy. Grilled salmon with a pesto mayonaisse ..... mmmm tasty.

Oh yeah - education conference.

Besides an inspiring plenary speech by Prof....
