Periodic Review Report Outcomes: 2008-2012

On June 1, 2014, Lehman College will submit its Periodic Review Report (PRR) to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). As the College prepares to launch its effort to devise the PRR, it makes sense to highlight the major outcomes following the submission of an institution’s PRR.

Briefly, MSCHE has established the following goals for the PRR:

It has also set forth the following objectives:

During the past 5 years, MSCHE requested follow-up reports (monitoring reports or progress letters) for 50% of submitted PRRs. During that time, six of the fourteen standards (Standard 2: Planning, Resource Allocation, and Institutional Renewal; Standard 3: Institutional Resources; Standard 7: Institutional Assessment; Standard 8: Student Admissions and Retention; Standard 12: General Education; and, Standard 14: Assessment of Student Learning) accounted for 83% of all MSCHE citations.

The most frequently cited standards for the past 5 and past 3 years were:

It should also be noted that there is overlap among the elements cited across a number of standards. For example, the element of linked planning, decision making, budgeting, and assessment, has been cited under Standard 2 and Standard 7.

In preparing the report, MSCHE’s stated goals and objectives and the types of information MSCHE seeks to fulfill each standard present the required framework. The statistics related to MSCHE’s PRR outcomes and an institution’s own experience (decennial review and follow-up reports) create a starting point for prioritizing the efforts it devotes to its PRR. All of this information helps an institution gain a richer understanding of its progress in pursuing its mission, goals, and objectives and a basis for maintaining a self-sustaining foundation for continual improvement that extends beyond the requirements of accreditation in a challenging environment.
