Three years ago, I was a veteran and single mother of three working a thankless job with no upward mobility. Through the veterans coordinator in my office, I received information about the Post 9/11 Montgomery Gl Bill. After reading all of the details, I decided to go back to school...full time. I was fearful about resigning from my position, however completing my undergraduate degree was so much more important. A family friend told me about Lehman College and it was surprisingly close to where I live. I applied online and visited the campus - I immediately knew I had found the right place.
I initially enrolled in the Adult Degree Program (ADP) and encountered the most helpful staff. I was overwhelmed at how responsive everyone was. After completing two semesters, and making the Dean's list both times, a professor recommended I look into the Lehman Scholars Program (LSP). I did my research on the program, decided to apply and was accepted! I have continued with my degree requirements along with those of the LSP. The courses have been very rich, challenging and a spark to further personal study. I also had the wonderful opportunity to have been accepted into the MATH-UP program. It is allowing me to complete my undergraduate coursework, achieve a graduate degree in Childhood Education and acquire a year of teaching experience.
My journey here at Lehman will be over in August 2013, but it has been the most memorable and opportunity-filled. I do not believe that I would have had so many opportunities had I attended college elsewhere. Lehman has truly embodied a beacon of hope and empowerment.
