The Power of Education 2...

Ever since I became a Lehman College student, I have been lucky enough to have encountered some very strong professors. As a student returning to college after a 15 year  hiatus, I have to be real and say that I am finding that my education here is not opening my eyes to any new or unlearned ideas and theories but is validating and giving a voice to the lessons that I have learned throughout my lifetime so far. When I say this, I mean no disrespect. I think that this is the greatest complement that a professor can receive from a student; knowing that what is being taught  is actually getting through to a student and is actually being applied to that student's life and society as a whole.

This semester, I have had the pleasure of encountering a professor who has challenged me at every turn.  Every idea, every opinion, every theory that I voice is met with such force that leaves me with no choice but to own my words or relent, re-evaluate and come back stronger and more thorough with my ideas and understandings. Call me crazy but this is a situation that I have been dying to be caught up in....

I love and appreciate the challenge because it allows me the opportunity to stand really firm and fight for the very things that I believe in. As a future educator, how can I hope to foster critical thinking skills in my students, if I have never been truly challenged as a student myself? How can I, as a future educator, hope to set high expectations and standards for my students if, high expectations and standards we never set for me to achieve?...

So, with an open, understanding and appreciative heart, I want to say to this professor Thank You!! I thank him for opening my eyes to the following truth - that to bring about change, it starts with the individual. I have to be the change that I wish to see. I am very proud to be a Lehman College student - and I am more than ready to take on all challenges coming my way as I continue my academic journey here... Go Lehman!!! Until next time, I wish everyone a productive and successful semester!
